WATERBURY, Conn. – Behind the strength of 10-for-18 shooting from the field by junior
Stephen Perry (Westampton, N.J.), the Post University men's basketball team powered past Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division foe Caldwell on Tuesday night at the Drubner Center. Perry netted a career-high 27 points and nailed seven triples in 22 minutes of action.
With the win, Post (8-1, 4-0 CACC) extended its region-best win streak to eight games and is off to its first 4-0 start in conference play since the 2003-04 campaign. Junior
Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) added 10 points and seven rebounds on 3-for-5 shooting from the field. Cummings went 2-for-4 from distance. Senior
Sarunas Jackson (Inland Empire, Calif.) netted nine points, five assists and four blocks on the night.
After Caldwell's Michael Balkovic scored the first basket of the contest, Post scored the next 10 points to claim a 10-2 lead with 16:18 left in the first half. During the spurt, which lasted 1:57, junior
Devin Willis (Seattle, Wash.) scored the first five points and Jackson hit a jumper. Cummings capped the stint with a triple.
With the Eagles ahead 22-14 with 8:27 to play in the opening stanza, they used a 15-2 run over a span of 3:50 to claim their largest lead of the half, a 21-point margin, 37-16. Perry and junior
Derrick Strong (St. Louis, Mo.) netted six and five points, respectively. Classmate
Travis Carbajal (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Cummings added jumpers. Carbajal finished with six points and five rebounds.
Caldwell (3-6, 0-2 CACC) cut the margin to 16, 45-21 at the intermission. The halftime lead was the largest of the season for Post.
In the second half, the Cougars got as close as nine, 52-43, on a Balkovic triple with 9:29 to play. From there, the Eagles went on a 10-2 run over a span of 4:21 to grow the margin back to 17, 62-45. Perry scored eight of the 10 Post points on the run and Carbajal added a dunk.
Post pushed its lead to as many as 19 in the second stanza. Perry hit a triple with 38 seconds to play to make the score 72-53. Billy McDonald hit a layup for Caldwell with 20 seconds left to arrive at the 72-55 final score.
For the game, Post shot 47.7 percent (27-for-57) from the field and for the seventh straight game it shot better than 43 percent from beyond the arc. The Eagles went 13-for-29 from distance good for 44.8 percent. Post tallied 16 assists and out-rebounded Caldwell 36-29.
Post will take on CACC foe Chestnut Hill on the road on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m.
