Cummings’ Career-High Lifts Men’s Basketball To 79-78 Overtime Victory Against Queens

Post Picks Up First Victory Of Season To Wrap Up Molloy Tip-Off Tournament

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Powered by the first career double-double by junior forward Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.), the Post University men's basketball team earned a 79-78 overtime victory against Queens on Saturday afternoon to complete play at the Molloy Tip-Off Tournament. In the win Cummings compiled 23 points and 10 rebounds to pace four Eagles in double figures.
 
Cummings was joined in double figures by senior Jake Wilcox (Kent, Wash.) and junior Effrin Ellison (Waterbury, Conn.) who scored 13 points apiece. Junior Devin Willis (Seattle, Wash.) added 10 points. In addition to his 13 points, Wilcox added four assists, three steals and senior Sarunas Jackson (Inland Empire, Calif.) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and four blocks.
 
With five seconds remaining in the overtime period, Wilcox drew a foul to earn a trip to the foul line. He split the pair of free throws to give Post (1-1) a 79-78 lead. On the ensuing Queens possession, Cummings stole the ball with one second on the clock to ensure the victory for the Eagles.
 
Post scored the first six points of the extra session to take a 76-70 lead with 3:43 to play. Wilcox bookended the spurt with a field goal and a pair of free throws and Cummings hit a layup. Queens (0-2) tied the score twice in overtime, but could never grab the lead.
 
Queens' Patrick Modzelewski forced overtime as he sank a game-tying triple with one second remaining in the second half. With 23 seconds remaining in regulation, Wilcox split a pair of free throws and Daniel Watson grabbed a defensive rebound for the Knights that set up the opportunity to tie. After Watson missed the initial game-tying three-pointer, Modzelewski was able to convert on the second opportunity.
 
With the score tied at 48-48 and 12:20 to play in regulation, Post went on an 11-1 run over a span of 2:26 to claim a 60-49 advantage. Ellison hit a pair of triples during the spurt for the Eagles, while junior Stephen Perry (Westampton, N.J.) and Cummings hit layups.
 
In the opening half, the Knights used a 12-0 run to take a 16-4 lead with 13:55 to play in the first half. Over a span of 2:44 Queens got buckets from four different players included a pair of field goals by Pat Piasecki.
 
However, Post pulled to within one after a 9-0 run over a span of 3:01 to make the score 25-24 in favor of Queens with 6:37 to play in the first period. Cummings and Ellison netted the first five points of the spurt with a layup and three-pointer, respectively. Ellison scored the final seven points of the run for Post. The Knights took a 41-35 lead into halftime when Patrick Parker converted a transition layup with two seconds remaining in the stanza.
 
For the game Queens shot 42.3 percent from the field and 4-for-12 from distance. Post managed a field goal percentage of 32.5, but shot 24-for-32 from the foul line. The Eagles created 21 Knights' turnovers and scored 19 points off the Queens miscues. Individually Parker led Queens with a game-high 20 points and Kevin Nascimento added 16.
 
Post will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 14, when it travels to Nyack for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
